The effects of Ulva lactuca powder, its filtrate, residue, and extract on the immune response of white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were studied in vitro and in vivo. Shrimp hemocytes incubated in the powder, filtrate, residue, and extract significantly increased their phenoloxidase (PO) activity and generation of superoxide anion. The hyaline cell (HC), granular cell (including semi-granular cell, GC), total hemocyte count (THC), phenoloxidase (PO) activity, and respiratory burst were examined after the shrimp were immersed in seawater containing the powder, its filtrate, and residue at 500 mg/l, and extract at 200 mg/l for 1, 3, and 5 h. These immune parameters were significantly higher in shrimp receiving the powder, filtrate, residue, and extract than in control shrimp after 3-5 h. In another experiment, shrimp immersed in seawater containing the powder, filtrate, residue, and extract after 3 h were challenged with Vibrio alginolyticus at 1 × 10^6 colony-forming unit (cfu) per shrimp, and then placed in seawater. Survival rate of shrimp immersed in seawater containing the powder, filtrate, residue, and extract was significantly higher than in control shrimp after 24-120 h. Phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency against V. alginolyticus were significantly higher in shrimp receiving the powder, filtrate, residue, and extract than in control shrimp. It was concluded that shrimp hemcytes incubated with U. lactuca powder, its filtrate, residue, and extract activated the prophenoloxidase system, and shrimp immersed in seawater containing the powder, filtrate, and residue at 500 mg/l, and extract at 200 mg/l had increased immunity and resistance against V. alginolyticus infection.
