Various optical gratings with spacing of 0.5, 0.7, 1, 1.5, and 2 microns have been made by recording the interference pattern of two laser beams on various recording materials, including Agfa 10E75 photoplates, NRC H-1 photolymer, and Shipley AZ1350 photoresist. Two bleaching methods have been tried on the photoplates. Diffraction efficiency up to 60% was observed. AZ1350 photoresist gratings have also been fabricated on ion exchanged glass surface optic wave guides. Successful grating couplers for coupling the laser beam in and out the guided layer were obtained.
