Effect of Sow Fed Fermented Liquid Feed on the Growth Performance of Nursing Piglets

This study examined the effect of sow fed fermented liquid feed (FLF) on the fecal bacteria, immune response and growth performance of nursing piglets. Twelve multiparous sows were randomly allocated to the experimental (fermented liquid feed) or control group (dry feed, DF) for 1 week prior to farrowing and for 4 weeks after parturition. Fermented liquid feed was prepared by mixing dry feed and water at a ratio of 1:2.5. The mixture was allowed to ferment by adding Lactobacillus and Bacillus (10 5 cfu mL -1) at a temperature of 25℃ for 24 hours prior to first feeding. The amount of feed for each sow was adjusted to according to their number of piglets and supplied twice a day. The results demonstrated fecal excretion from sows fed FLF had significantly (P<0.05) lower numbers of Lactobacillus than sows fed DF and sows fed FLF had significantly (P<0.01) higher concentration of lactic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid than sows fed DF. Although the birth weight of piglets from sows fed FLF was significantly (P<0.05) lower than piglets from sows fed DF, the weight gain of piglets from sows fed FLF tended to be higher than piglets from sows fed DF after 4 weeks from birth. The IgG concentration of piglets from sows fed FLF was significantly higher than piglets from sows fed DF 4 weeks after birth. The ratio of Lactobacillus and coliform did not significantly differ between the two groups. The fecal lactic acid concentration in piglets from sows fed FLF was significantly (P <0.05) higher than piglets from sows fed DF. The fecal butyric acid concentration in piglets from sows fed FLF was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than piglets from sows fed DF, but the fecal acetic acid and propionic acid concentration showed no significant difference between the two groups. In conclusion, sows fed FLF influenced their piglets in terms of fecal organic acid, Ig G concentration and weight gain.
