Influence of Anterior Teeth Alignment of Medical Students on the Satisfaction with the Dental Appearance and the Motivation for Orthodontic Treatment

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of anterior teeth alignment on the satisfaction with the dental appearance and the demand for orthodontic treatment. A sample of freshmen at National Yang-Ming University was randomly stratified for selection according to gender Data were collected through a structured questionnaire. One hundred fifty-seven questionnaires were analyzed with Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test to compare the importance of various factors on satisfaction with the dental appearance and the demand for orthodontic treatment. The results showed that 70.3% of our sample considered that proper teeth alignment is important for facial appearance. Irregularity of the upper or lower anterior teeth was significantly associated with satisfaction with the dental appearance. Fifty percent of this sample expressed a demand for orthodontic treatment. Irregularity of the upper and/or lower anterior teeth and increased overjet were associated with perceived orthodontic treatment demand. However, only 5.2% of this sample had a demand for orthodontic treatment when considering the costs.
