Dental Caries and Dental Health Behavior of 3-5-year-old Children in Kindergarten and at Home

Many studies have been done on children's dental health status in kindergarten, but much less research has been carried out on children's behaviors at home. In this study, we assessed the dental caries status and dental health behaviors of preschool children in kindergarten and at home. Data were collected by an oral cavity check from 3~5-year-old children in Taiwan, and a questionnaire administered to the main caregivers was designed to investigate the oral hygiene behaviors of these children. There were 3044 children in this study, 2373 children in kindergarten (77.96%), and 671 children at home (22.04%). Children's dental caries status was shown to be positively correlated with the habit of eating sweet foods and age, regardless of whether they went to kindergarten or not. However, children's dental caries status was negatively correlated with the beginning age and frequency of tooth-brushing. Children whose parents or main caregivers helped them clean their teeth and who could brush their teeth after eating sweet foods had relatively lower values of the deft index.
