Denture Wearers' Care Habits in Taiwan: Assessment of Northern, Middle, and Southern Regions and Three Major Cities

摘要

可撤式義齒清潔不良是造成義齒性口腔炎一個很重要的因素，義齒的清潔方式可分為機械式及化學式兩大類，近代學者大多主張兩種方式併用可達最佳的義齒清潔效果。為暸解北中南地區及主要城市可撤式義齒裝戴者清潔義齒之習慣及義齒清潔錠認知狀況，於民國92年3月間，以隨機抽樣電話訪問40歲以上居民共1829人，其中17.8%的受訪者有裝戴可撤式義齒。在願意接受清潔習慣問卷調查的300人中，有71%的人用一般牙膏清潔義齒，只有10%的人用義齒專用牙膏，67%的人用一般牙刷刷洗義齒，只有4%的人用義齒專用牙刷。有關浸泡義齒的方式，調查中發現只有10%的人用義齒清潔錠浸泡。在使用義齒清潔錠的30人中，40%的人知道使用義齒專用牙刷，23%的人使用義齒專用牙膏。66%的人由牙醫師介紹而知道使用義齒清潔錠。結論：受訪之義齒裝戴者普遍不了解清潔義齒之方法，牙醫界應加強宣導正確的清潔義齒之方法及工具。

Plaque on the tissue surface of dentures is an important cofactor in the pathogenesis of denture stomatitis. Denture cleansers in common use can be broadly divided into those utilizing mechanical or chemical effects. A combination of soaking and brushing has been recommended in recent studies. The purpose of this study was to survey the cleaning methods used by wearers of complete and partial dentures and provide the results as a reference for disseminating information on denture cleaning. This survey included 1829 inhabitants randomly sampled from around Taiwan by telephone during March 2003. The results indicated that of the surveyed people aged ≥ 40 years, 17.8% had complete or partial dentures. Among the 300 people who completed the questionnaire, 71% used common toothpaste to clean their dentures, and 10% used more-appropriate denture paste; 67% of wearers brushed their dentures with common toothbrushes, while 4% used appropriate denture brushes. Only 10% of wearers used commercial denture cleansers to soak their dentures. Among 30 wearers who used commercial denture cleansers, 40% used appropriate denture paste and 23% used appropriate denture brushes. Of those that had received advice about commercial denture cleansers, 66% had received it from dentists. The findings of this survey indicate that a large number of wearers do not know how to satisfactorily clean their dentures. Education of the denture-wearing public is urgently needed. Dentists must provide suitable methods of denture cleaning to their patients.
