The government of the Republic of China has formulated the ”Challenge 2008” comprehensive six-year national development plan as the latest effort to foster the creativity and talent Taiwan needs to transform itself into a ”green silicon island. ”E-Taiwan” is one of the projects, which leads the digital resource as main components of reforming culture, education, economics and government. This can predict that digital resources will enlighten the whole environment. The paper intends to discuss how the public libraries meet the challenges and redefine their roles for the coming digital era. Building digital collection, specialized local collections for users' need are the approaches; the issues and challenges during the procedure are presented. By the end, personalized service and cooperative digital reference services as new facilitates for online information services are developed and recommended.
