Body Mass Index Reference for Taiwanese Children and Adolescents

並列摘要

Objective: Reference curves for body mass index (BMI) in Taiwanese children and adolescents were constructed based on the data obtained in a nationwide Physical Fitness Survey in 1997. Methods: A systematic random sampling was selected. Data for 21428 boys and 20603 girls (total 42031) aged from 6.5 to 18.5 years were used in the analysis. The LMS method was used to smooth the percentile (3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 97th) curves. Results and Conclusions: These BMI percentile curves showed a definite physiological rising pattern towards adulthood. The comparison of the smoothed data of median BMI in the current study and the real value of median BMI in 1991 from age 7 to age 18 revealed that the difference of both boys (BMI in the current study minus BMI in1991) was between 0.10 and 0.44, and that of both girls was between 0.03 and 0.41. Apparently, among the six-year period, the increasing value of BMI for Taiwanese children and adolescents was below 0.5.
