From 1998 to 1992, 10 patients with Kienböck’s disease in national Taiwan University Hospital were treated surgically. There were 7 males and 3 females. The mean age at operation was 37.5 years (ranged: 20 to 55 years). Seven patients had a history of trauma. The major complaints wee pain and reduced range of motion. According to the Lichtman’s classification. Two of them were stage II, and 8 were stage III. Radiographic examination showed significant negative ulnar variance in 7 patients. The operative procedure performed were 2 limited intercarpal fusion (LIF), 2 LIF plus silicone replacement arthroplasty (SRA), and 3 LIF plus radial shortening, and 3 radial shortening only. Eight cases could be followed with a mean of 41 months (from 1 to 5 years). Totally, five patients had satisfactory results. Three were treated by radial shortening group, and the other two were LIF and SRA. The postoperative improvement in range of motion was more significant in dorsiflexion, and ulnar deviation. Pinch power improved much more than grasp strength.
