For the Purpose of establishing a database of moment arms, cross-sectional areas and line of action of the trunk muscles, the CAT films of the patients from NTUH were used for study. The films of patients with abdominal surgery, abdominal tumors, ascites, abdominal injuries and spinal deformities were excluded. There were 21 males and 15 females. The mean age was 42.6 years old, the mean weight was 64.8 Kg and the mean height was 165.3 cm. In the computer, the muscle cross-sectional areas and the locations of the muscle centroids were measured. The smaller the magnitude of measurements, the greater is the coefficient of variation. There were no statistic significances in the x, y coordinate values of muscle centroids, in the cross-sectional areas and in the angles of muscle lines of action at each disc level. The trunk muscles were right-left symmetric. When comparing with the database from other centers, the cross-sectional areas were slightly smaller in abdominal oblique muscles, rectus abdominal muscles, psoas muscles and quadratus muscles, but the difference was not significant. The cross-sectional areas of the erector spinae muscles had no significant difference. In the measurement of moment arm, the x, y distance and direct distance between the centroid of dise and the centroids of abdominal ablique muscles, rectus abdominal muscles, psoas muscles and erector spinae muscles had no significant differences. There were little difference in the x, y distance and direct distance between the centroid of disc and the centroid of quadratus muscles.
