In order to set up the data-bank of the spinal instrumentation surgery performed in Taiwan, a questionnaire-based survey about the spinal surgeries with implants in 1992 was performed. The information including the gender and age of the patient, indications of the surgery, surgical levels of implants, and surgical procedures were obtained from the questionnaire. Among the complete, effective questionnaires returned, the data of 1,620 patients were acquired. Among them 4207% were male and 57.8% were female. More than 75% were less than 60 years old, The most common indication for using implants was spondylolisthesis, which counted for 31.5%. The fourth and the fifth lumbar vertebrae were the two most commonly operated levels and the posterior approach was preferred by most surgeons. Because of the rapid increase of the aging people in Taiwan, who were prone to suffering from spinal problems, we would like to retrieve the useful information from this systemic retrospective survey for the future application and development of spinal implants. Also, we hoped that the result of this survey could provide for more appropriate spinal instrumentation surgeries. Furthermore, we aimed to render the most useful data for the design and development of the spinal implants that could meet the actual demands in Taiwan.
