Giant cell tumor of bone is a benign, locally aggressive tumor. Many modalities of treatment have been suggested, however, the treatments is still controversial. In this retrospective study, we reviewed our experience of treatment of patients with giant cell tumors in our hospital. From 1979to 1995, there were 33 patients diagnosed as giant cell tumor of the bone and treated at our hospital. Among them included 15 females and 18males. Four patients were referred from other hospitals where the primary operation was performed. The follow-upperiod averaged 3.2 years (range, 1 to 4 years). For the 26cases with tumors in the extremities, 10patients received curettage and bone grafting; 8 patients received curettage, extended by burring and phenol cauterization, and impaction with cement; 8 patients received en bloc resection with or without reconstruction. Totally 11 patients had recurrence, including 9 (90%) in the group with curettage and bone grafting, and the other 2 (25%) in the group with curettage, burring, phenol cauterization and cementing. None of the patients with en bloc resection had recurrence. From this experience, we recommended curettage, burring, phenol cauterization and bone cementing for the treatment of the giant cell tumor involving bone. However, the extensive destruction of bone may need a wide resection and reconstruction.
