摘要

There is an increasing trend in Internet use and its application in health care. In this study, we attempted to investigate the use of the Internet among dietitians in Taiwan. Structured self-administered questionnaires were mailed to dietitians of the Chinese Federation of Dietitians Associations. Of the 494 respondents to the questionnaires, 89.6% of them used the Internet ≧ 1h/week, and 98.0% of them had used e-mail. Among these e-mail uses, 62.9% of them used it daily. The purposes of using the Internet were ranked as follows: searching for updated nutritional information (88.6%), exploring current nutrition-related activities and topics (55.8%), communicating with professional organizations (49.3%) and seeking evidence to support clinical decisions related to patient care (40.8%). We further found that dietitians at medical care institutions (MCIs) were more likely to seek for evidence to support clinical decisions related to patient care than those of non-MCls (p<0.05); on the other hand, more dietitians of non-MCIs used the Internet for exploring general activities and topics (p<0.05). In terms of use of nutrition-related websites, 99.6% of dietitians used domestic websites (Taiwanese websites), and 75.9% used foreign websites. More MCI dietitians accessed websites of both domestic-and foreign-medical institutions as well as international academic databases than non-MCI dietitians (p<0.05), while more non-MCI dietitians accessed government health administrative agencies and commercial corporations (p<0.05). In using academic databases, 59.9% dietitians used domestic databases and 51.2% used international databases. In conclusion, the current study revealed that a substantial proportion of dietitians in Taiwan have experience in using the Internet and information technology. The results of the current study provide valuable information for establishing websites tailored to the needs of Taiwanese dietitians.
