The prevalence of childhood obesity in Hong Kong was 18.7% in 2005. Recent surveys reported that most schools provide sub-optimal lunch and snack choices for the primary school students. As healthy eating is an important factor for the growth and development of children, the Department of Health in Hong Kong published a set of nutritional guidelines on lunch and snacks for primary school students in 2006. The aims are to promote healthy eating and to decrease the prevalence of childhood obesity. The target users are primary school principals, teachers, parents and food providers. Guidelines on the quantity and the quality of the food items to be served and consumed are given.
