A Study on a Group of Hospital Dietitians' Experience inTeaching Students

In this study, we explored the experience of a group of hospital dietitians in teaching students, in order to understand their understanding and beliefs regarding their role as teachers and the difficulties they encountered during the teaching experience. In this qualitative research, in-depth interviews were conducted with seven hospital dietitians to collect subjective accounts of their teaching experience. Data analysis involving grounded theory was conducted and led to the conclusion that time pressure was the principal factor affecting the teaching experience of these dietitians. Data analysis further identified the common belief of these dietitians that teachers are supposed to act as role models and present proper ways of putting theories into practice. However, hospital dietitians generally perceived teaching as just another task that they are supposed to perform, and is thus another burden on their time. Most of them were not very enthusiastic about teaching because of the lack of incentives. In short, hospital dietitians' beliefs and understanding of their role as teachers, the process of teaching, and their expectations toward the future are interrelated factors affecting each other. The findings suggest that for hospital dietitians to successfully perform their role as teachers of student interns, it is necessary to make them well-informed as to the requirements of being a teacher, help them build on their professional and teaching skills, and provide them with administrative support to lessen burdens on their time. In addition, hospital dietitians should be provided with more attractive incentives to motivate them to become better teachers and role models for students.
