Heinz Bodies in Hemoglobin H Disease after Splenectomy: a Case Report

Microscopic evaluation of RBC on a peripheral blood smear aids invaluably in identification and recognition of morphologic abnormalities. Typical and specific blood cell morphologies lead the observers to the accurate diagnosis of a variety of disorders. However, atypical morphological changes always challenge the laboratory personnel. Herein, we presented a case of alpha-thalassemia/ Hb H disease after receiving splenectomy and cholecystectomy, showing no typical "bite cells" characters in RBC which contained intact Heinz body inclusions. The specialty of this case might draw our attentions to variant Heinz body RBCs regarding the stain and morphology.
