Occupation is the domain of concern for occupational therapy. A focus on occupation differentiates occupational therapy from other health professions. The aim of this paper is to energise occupational therapists to become occupation-focused in practice. Occupation-focused practice enables occupational therapists to address the occupational needs of clients and contribute to their health and well being in a unique way. The first part of the paper presents the relevant theories that explain the rationale for occupation-focused practice and the models which provide useful frameworks for occupational therapists. Part one also introduces occupational science as a key contributor to occupational therapy. Providing foundational knowledge and evidence for translation to practice and expanding thinking from biophysical to occupational are important ways the science informs the practice. Part two of the paper presents strategies for thinking and being an occupational therapist who views the world through an occupational lens and is occupation-focused in practice.
