To Challenge the Impossible: On Antoine Vitez at the "Community Theatre of Ivry"

法國當代導演安端•維德志於一九七○年代在巴黎市南郊以工人階層為主的易符里創建社區劇場,市內不要說是戲院建築,連一處像樣的表演場地都付諸闕如,且預算拮據,缺乏有經驗的演員,他卻始終堅持上演高水準的劇目,揭櫫社區劇場應該超越地域的限制,成為一座屬於所有人的秀異劇場,他視之為向不可能的挑戰,這正是他對導演工作下的定義。維德志利用簡易的表演裝置排練非具象的戲,在易符里的公共場所巡迴演出,表演別開生面,充滿創意、活力與批判精神,表演意象同時遊走在多重層面之間。導演解讀劇本的眼光犀利,分析鞭辟入裹,演員個個熱烈以赴,鮮活地轉化形而上的思想為血肉之軀,每每發人深省。「易符里社區劇場」為法國當代戲劇史寫下了一頁傳奇。

Antoine Vitez is one of the important directors of the twentieth-century French theatre. His most inventive and critical works were staged during the seventies in the ”Community Theatre of Ivry”, situated in the southern suburbs of Paris. In fact, there was no theatre building before 1980 in the proletarian Ivry, so Vitez was obliged to perform his spectacles in its various public places with meager budget and semi-professional actors. Nevertheless, he always insisted on producing high-level literary works to make the Community Theatre ”elite for all”. This ambition might sound impossible, yet to challenge the impossible is precisely his definition of mise en scène. To make a virtue of necessity, Vitez exploited simple setups to rehearse non-illustrative yet powerful and original works in which the scenic images worked simultaneously on several levels of significations. His sharp, to-the-point analyses of plays, revealed by highly resourceful actors, incited the spectators to think. Both intellectual and theatrical, each new production of Vitez in Ivry created sensations and won him acclaims. This article analyzes Vitez' conception and strategies of mise en scène in Ivry, then comments on his scenic works, especially those of contemporary playwrights, and finally points out the reasons of his success.
