Who is Speaking?-The Strategy of Public Address in Krzysztof Wodiczko's Performative Projects

This article aims to analyze a series of artistic works by Krzysztof Wodiczko in 1980s whose major theme is concerned with city strangers. I will focus on the ways a variety of uncanny storytellers make themselves present through electronic medium in his works. The medium to tell stories of strangers include vehicles designed for homeless people, cane with electronic images, buildings that can speak, and wearable armors. I argue that it is important that we explore Wodiczko's work from three interlinking and inseparable elements, that is, speaker's position, the locale of the speaking, and the media of the speaking, so as to explore the characters and social contexts of his artistic works. In other words, the whole Wodiczko's strategies are intended to bring city strangers forward telling their special stories in a city public space in a way that is otherwise exclusive to them. This article concludes by suggesting that by way of exploring Wodiczko's work holistically we may understand a host of issues in association with electronic images, and rethink as well works of contemporary digital interactive installation and electronic experimental video art.
