Currently, the application of laparoscopic approach for the resection of either colon or rectal cancer is proven to be technically feasible, safe, and efficient. However, the randomized clinical trials showing that the oncologic results are equivalent between laparoscopic and traditional open surgery are only limited to patients with colon cancer. In contrast, for the surgical resection of rectal cancer, the treatment efficacy of laparoscopic approach remains ambiguous because the data based on randomized prospective clinical trials are still not available. However, our initial data from phase II clinical trial shows that laparoscopic total mesorectal excision is technical efficient and with encouraging oncologic results for the treatment of rectal cancer. The author recommends the laparoscopic surgery because it can provide both quicker postoperative convalescence and favorable oncologic outcomes for patients with colorectal cancer.
