For a decade, Freud's scientific study was devoted to neurohistolology and clinical neurology. Freud assumed the concept of ”sum of excitation”. From a neuropsychological viewpoint, it is certainly a prophetic statement, for about a hundred years later we are able to record cortical surface potentials that seem to bear the character of such a ”sum of excitation”. This article provides us with a discussion on how Freud developed his hypothesis of ”sum of excitation”. It also provided a thorough literature review on later important studies which have been based on this hypothesis, all contribute to the establishment of an ”objective psychology” based on neurology.
