摘要

本文主旨在探討都市設計之意義、功能、涉獵範圍及基重要性，並指出其與建築及都市規畫之不同處。近代都市文明之急劇變遷，社會意識及文化行爲之改變，科學技術與資訊之發達，給予都市之實質環境及社會環境莫大這衝擊。人類在都市中的工作、居住、娛樂環境而臨革命性之變動，建築師及規劃師已不能單獨挑起塑造實質環境的責任。都市設計之産生是由於近代建築的失敗興傳統都市規劃之破産。
本文試給都市設計之演變依其學說、派別及其領導人做有系統之分析。更根據歐美各國都市化的經驗及結果與美國建築教育之演進及改革尋找出都市設計之沿革及都市教育之模式。
在都市化不可避免的都市問題日形嚴重，建築師、規劃師、工程師尚未充份瞭解面臨都市各種問題，而不能發揮合作無間效率的台灣，都市設計工作之推廣，都市設計教育之實施是刻不容緩的。本文針對台灣建築教育實況，對如何培育都市設計人才有數項建築，以爲彌補傳統式建築教育制度不足之處。

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the nature of urban design its definition, its function, its scope and its importance It also tries to point out the differences between urban design and architecture and city planning Today, our urban environment is undergoing a revolutionary transformation, architects and planners alone are no longer able to take the resonsibilities of shaping the physical environment ”Urban design was born out of the failure of the modern movement of architecture and the bankruptcy of conventional city planning”.
Several schools of thought in urban design are identified by tracing the history and major events, models of urban design education are developed by analysing the evolution of architecture education in the past several decades.
It is the main purpose of this paper to point out the urgent nature of the urban problems in, and the lack of conscious and qualified urban designers in the design profession Several suggestions are made in the paper to improve the current architecture education system in Taiwan, by incorporating major urban design teaching efforts in different levels, in order to produce qualified graduates and better equipped design professionals to fill the gaps in the shaping of the physical environment.
