Motor vehicle-related injuries is currently one of the major causes of death in Hualien County., with the highest incidence among young aboriginal male residents. In this study, 1,195 high school students from 27 classes were selected by a random systematic cluster sampling method, and a structured , self- administered questionnaire was used to investigate their methods of transportation. According to the 1,141 (95.5) collected questionnaires, 8.1% of male students and 1.9% of female students go to school by motorcycle, whereas 70.3% of the males and 25.5% of females go on outings by motorcycle. Half of the students chose motorcycles as their favorite transportation method. More than 90% of the students ride motorcycles without licenses, and more than 30% of them learn how to ride under their families’ instruction. The reasons why so many unlicensed high school students ride motorcyles,in spite of the risk of legal punishment, should be explored in the future. Parents’ opinions about unlicensed students driving motorcycles should be surveyed.
