Geotechnical Investigations of Sand Dune beneath the Fort Zeelandia, Tainan, Taiwan

位於台南安平的熱蘭遮城是17世紀初由荷蘭人所建，爲台灣第一座磚造要塞，該城不但是當時台灣經濟、政治與軍事的首府，更代表台灣開始登上世界史的重要里程碑，在台灣史與世界歷史上具有重要意義。由於爲求易於防守與提高安全性，該城乃建築於砂丘頂上，經過將近四百年的演變，目前僅在地面上留下少數殘蹟，本研究主要由大地工程的觀點探討做爲熱蘭遮城底部砂丘的特性並研究造成該城破壞的機制，以供未來考古、古蹟維護與土木工程建設參考。

Fort Zeelandia is the first brick fort in Taiwan built by Dutch in the early 17th century. This fortress represents not only the former capital of economy, politics and military of Taiwan at that time, but also poses a significant milestone representing the initiating of recording Taiwan to the world history. In spite of the great importance of Fort Zeelandia to the Taiwanese and world history, only a few remaining walls are still visible on the ground. The lack of researches causes essential problems to define its earlier boundaries, realize the use of the land, and conserve the historic remaining walls. This paper presents a series of studies on the sand dune beneath the fortress. The results provide a reference to realize local geotechnical properties and the possible mechanism to cause the collapse of the fortress.
