The finding that multipotent stem cells are present in many adult mammalian organs and that these cells can be isolated and cloned shed light to the potentials of cellular therapy for neurological disorders. Neurological disorders that may be benefit from cellular therapy include Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, senile dementia, stroke, head injury and spinal cord injury. Many animal studies about stem cell engraftment into intact brain, cortical defect or spinal injury site have shown various results. But they all revealed that local environment was the most important determinant for the fate of the grafted stem cells. Cloning protocol refinement, rejection management, grafted site environment modification or stem cell genomic modification may be the directions for further study. Besides, site and timing for cellular therapy and grafted bed environment physiology need to be carefully studied.
