Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources for Agriculture

並列摘要

In terms of agricultural productivity, the island of Taiwan enjoys the fame of being called “Treasure Island”. However, the native flora has been diminished by various development projects. Likewise, the genetic base of major farm corps has been narrowed down due to rapid progress in plant breeding and its large-scale adoption as well as frequent turnover of improved cultivars. Because of these setbacks, the responsibility of maintaining and distributing conserved plant germplasm has been arosed. In order to properly conserve the crop germplasm in Taiwan, the National Plant Genetic Resources Center (NPGRC) in Taiwan Agriculture Research Institute (TARI) was inaugurated in 1993 and immediately started up necessary operations. NPGRC’s orientations are to work towards the improvement of crop breeding and to answer the various requirements of crop utilization.
