Commenting on modern traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) researches of tuberculosis (TB), we found that a traditional viewpoint of combined internal and external causes and initial inner qi vacuity followed by external pathogen was kept. As for pattern identification, three main categories were used, but no consensus had been reached. On the other hand, quite a few advances were observed in the fields of basic researches dealing with crude extracts and pure compounds of single medicines, but experiments on formulae were relatively lacking. As for clinical trials, most of them were observational studies involving the integration of TCM and modern Western medicine, and an increasing trend of randomized trial was also developing. The modern TCM researches of TB seemed to suggest that integration of TCM and modern Western medicine had better outcomes than those using modern Western medicine alone.
