Explorations of Urban Blocks and Alley Fabric in the Historic City Center of Tainan for Conservation and Regeneration Implementation

This study explored the morphology and the everyday life cultural characteristics of urban blocks that were formed during the Japanese occupation in the historic city center of Tainan. The urban fabric contributes to the development of contemporary living culture and a sense of place. However, the practice of urban regeneration rarely pays attention to the discussion of the relationship between urban fabric and living culture, while emphasizes the significance of historic architectural research. The city improvement plan enacted during the Japanese occupation resulted in a grid pattern that overlapped with the existing fabric in the historic city center of Tainan. However, the urban blocks in this grid pattern allow the traditional alley fabric to survive inside them. Consideration of how to support the balance of residential and commercial conditions in this high-density city centre while simultaneously protecting the historical character of the urban fabric is an important task for the future development of Tainan’s city centre. To understand the urban morphology and the everyday life cultural characteristics in the urban blocks in the historic city center of Tainan, this case study will analyze three urban blocks. Through the exploration of historic social background and the observation of the contemporary everyday life in the urban blocks, this study will analyze the role and value of urban morphology in the alley fabric inside the blocks in urban conservation and regeneration practices. This study can thus help consideration in future urban management, for the maintenance of the unique sense of place and the continuity of living culture in the historic city center of Tainan.
