Comparative Study of X-Ray Mammography and Xerography of Breast in Diagnosis of Breast Tumors-A Preliminary Report

One hundred and twenty patients were examined with x-ray mammography and/or xerography. Fourty-one patients had pathological results. The detection rates of breast lesions are 100% in mammography and 84% in xerography. The sensitivities for differentiation in the malignant disease are 60% for mammography, 54% for xerography and 57% for both; in the benign disease 45% for mammography, 60% for xerography and 69% for both. Spiculation of the, margin of breast nodules is a specific sign for malignant disease. The well-defined, round or ovoid mass usually favored a benign process. But occasionally the traditional ”well-defined” or ”ill-defined” lesion did not contribute much in differential diagnosis. Calcification is more often observed in carcinoma and distributed as irregular linear or scattered dusty shape. Foreign body granuloma usually had egg-shell calcification. The diagnostic accuracy of cancer-invaded axillary lymph node is higher in xerography (62%) than mammography (33%), but the false-positive rate is also high. Thus, the x-ray mammography and xerography are convenient, effective methods in breast evaluation and expose the patients with very low dose of X-ray.
