Because ultrasound examination has been proved to be useful for differential diagnosis of head and neck lesions, more and more ENT doctors begin to perform the ultrasound of the head and neck by themselves for their daily practice in recent 10 years. Because the ultrasound is useful and easily learned, performed and accessible by ENT doctors, it is becoming a routine imaging tool in ENT clinical practice and potentially a part of ENT residency training. This review introduces the characteristics, examination skills and tips of ENT head and neck ultrasound and its application in diagnosis of thyroid disease, non-thyroid nonsalivary neck mass, major salivary gland disease and other specific diagnostic purposes.
