The Implementation and Effectiveness of a Teleintervention Platform for Children with Hearing Impairment

BACKGROUND: With the rapid development of telecommunication and distance technology, new opportunities to provide telepractice programs to children with special needs are increasing. The purpose of this study was to develop a teleintervention program specifically designed for children with hearing loss, and to probe the effectiveness and the possible influencing factors of using this new intervention model.METHODS: 25 children with hearing impairment participated in this study in their summer vacation. The training materials consisted of two major parts: common vocabulary, and music concepts (e.g. rhythm and melody). A paired-t test and an independent t-test were used to analyze the differences between the correct percentages of the last two training sessions (i.e.post-test score) and those of two initial training sessions (i.e. pre-test scores), and the possible influencing variables.RESULTS: The post-training scores were significantly higher than those of pretraining on three auditory perception tasks: word recognition (from 96.83% to 98.25%); rhythm recognition (from 65.36% to 73.11%); and melody recognition (from 72.05% to 78.53%). Independent factors such as: gender, hearing devices, degree of hearing impairment, and previous musical experience were not relevant to the progress of training.CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that teleintervention held great promise for hearing-related professionals and revealed improved outcomes for children with hearing loss and their families, although continued evaluation of the model and further research was needed.
