摘要

文學作品，尤其小說，必然存有一個文本的空間作為敘事場景。人的思維投射在其所存有的空間之內，使得空間成為一個形象化的意象，透過閱讀仔細觀看書寫者的語言遊戲，重新解析後再演繹出的空間就饒富意義。這是因為空間的意義固然具普同性的認知基礎，但亦可能因人群、文化、社會而有所不同；而在文學生產中的空間意象經過書寫者以文字化過程，符碼的陳列編排後，使得同一物件被賦予不同的認知與感受；而再透過閱聽者解讀符碼後，更跳脫物件本身單純表述，自然承載了生動豐富的意涵。本論文討論三篇英美短篇小說中的空間意象，一方面分析文本中出現的空間意象，一方面透過這些空間意象解析小說人物心理狀態，並呈現小說佈局的張力。

A textual space exists in literary works, especially in the novel, as the background scene of the narrative. After particular minds are projected into it, the space evolves into an imaginary object. Concomitantly, the space becomes an image of abundant significance in the text after in-depth reading and analyses of the language between the lines. Space possesses certain universality worldwide; however, space also connotes difference ideas in terms of different races, cultures, and societies. In literary production, the space image is transformed into the writer's language; consequently, the same object is perceived, conceived, and represented differently after the codes being re-arranged. The representation of the space image thus conveys abundant implications in readers' re-interpretation. This paper discusses the space image in three short stories. The researcher focuses on analyzing and interpreting the space image pertaining to the psychological status of the main characters to manifest the structure of the narratives.
