The purposes of this study were to investigate the relationship between the self-efficacy, perceived AIDS threat, and sexual behaviors among the male homosexuals in Taiwan. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between Octorber 1994 and March 1995 among 108 male homosexuals. Data were collected by self-administered, anonymous questionnaire, and whole blood. The mean age of all respondents was 25.8 ± 6.0 years, of 84 (77.8%) subjects who had been HIV-1 serum antibody tested, 8 (9.5%) were HIV-1 antibody positive. The following results were obtained: (1) 74% (80/108) of respondents reported engaging in anal intercourse within the past year. 10.2%-12.0% of the men reported that they always used condoms during anal intercourse. The mean number of partners over the subjects’ lifetimes was 53.26 (range, 1-999) and the mean number of years of homosexual partners was 12.80 (range, 1-120). (2) Self-efficacy of subjects was strongly associated with the number of sexual partners and sexual behaviors. (3) Perceived AIDS threat was not associated with the sexual behaviors of the subjects. (4) Multiple regression analysis explained 48.48% of the following variables in the number of lifetime partners: the number of months of with the same sexual partner, the number of partners per year, years of education, monogamous or not, having ever been HIV tested, age of first sexual activities, and alcohol consumption before sexual activities. (6) Multiple regression analysis explained 27.51% of the following variables in risky sexual behaviors: self-efficacy, anal intercourse of the first sexual behaviors, the number of partners per year, and monogamous or not.
