The purpose of this phenomenological study was to realize the meaning of undertaking amniocentesis for women of advanced maternal age. The researcher interviewed sixteen women of advanced maternal age within two weeks after they had undertaken amniocentesis The participants were interviewed and audiotaped in a non-structured way. Giorgi’s qualitative method of phenomenology was used to analyze the data. The major finding of this study revealed four essential concepts as follows: (1) Struggling in choosing (2) Experiencing feelings of uncertainty (3) Realizing fate and fortune (4) The image of maternal role. The nursing staff become more sensitive to provide nursing care by understanding the lived experiences of these pregnant women of advanced maternal age who undertook amniocentesis.
