The purpose of the study is to evaluate the changes of objective life quality (OLQ) of chronic mentally ill patients under the current psychiatric patient care system in the Taipei area. A total of eighty-nine valid cases were selected from medical centers and community hospitals with psychiatric acute wards (33 cases), day care centers (21 cases), and OPDs (35 cases). The 21-item OLQ scale introduced by Heinrichs was used to evaluate patients’ symptoms, signs and objective functional status. The results of this study indicate that: (1) the OLQ of schizophrenic patients are lower than the affective disorder patients (p=0.0001); (2) The OLQ of chronic patients having more than ten years history are lower than those patients with less than ten years (p<0.001); (3) The cases treated at day care centers have lower OLQ than the OPD cases (p=0.0028). These results also indicate that Heinrichs' OLQ scale is a useful tool not only in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the current psychiatric care system but also for longitudinal study of proposed care programs for chronic mentally Ⅲ patients.
