Nursing Support During Labor and Delivery: Comparing Mothers' and Nurses' Perception

摘要

The perception of social support from nurses has been shown to enhance a woman’s coping effort and positive feeling about her labor experience. The purpose of this study was to examine (a) Which nursing support behaviors did mothers perceived as most helpful in assisting them to cope with labor and delivery? (b) Were there significant differences between nurses’ and mothers’ perceptions of the nursing support behaviors during labor and delivery? A group of mothers and a group of nurses were recruited: the mothers group were 202 women within 12-36 hours of their labor and deliver; the nurse group were 61 registered nurses with at least 6 months of labor and delivery experience. Nursing Support in Labor and Delivery Questionnaire was used to collect data, excepting the Demographic Data Form. The results indicated the most helpful behaviors perceived by women included instructing how to push, informing the women about their labor progress, instructing inbreathing I relaxing, answering questions truthfully, and making the women feel cared about as an individual. The most helpful behaviors perceived by nurses included instructing how to push, explaining hospital routines, giving praise, informing the women about their labor progress, and making the women feel cared about as an individual. Factor analysis of the data defined three categories of nursing support behaviors. It was found that in those women and nurses who perceived informational support as being the most helpful in coping with stress from labor and delivery, then tangible support was less helpful. In addition, significant differences were found between the two groups in the perceived helpfulness of three categories of nursing support behaviors (p<.01). Results of stepwise multiple regression indicated that the best subset to predict the criterion variable of nursing support of women included birth attendance, and sex expectation of newborn. In the nurse group, hospital policy (permit birth attendance) explained 24.75% of the variance.
