The chemical additives are often injected into the refining processes to meet the requirements of the process operations. For instance, the filming corrosion inhibitors and the neutralizers are added into the overhead system of the main distillation tower of CDU to prevent the corrosion of the equipment internals. Most of the chemical additives are surfactants. Due to its' surface active functional properties,. the additives can satisfy the requirements of the operations, but, unfortunately, result in the adverse effects on the operations of the down stream equipments for the different chacteristic combinations of the composite properties of the additives at different locations. This article describes the probable causes for the W/O emulsions and the solid particles suspension problems happened in the reflux dram. The corrective measures to stop the emulsion and solid particles scespension are mentioned. Some results of the experiments conducted in the past few weeks are mentioned also. Hundreds of chemical additives have been developed in the markets. While they are applied in the refinery, the brands and the dosages of them are different from place to place. The ways to solve the adverse effects are always to analyze the problems with the laboratory tests and to deal with these problems according to the results.
