American Journalism and Chinese American Identity during China's Civil War: Perspectives of Three Leading American Newspapers on China's Civil War (1948-50)

Since the mid-nineteenth century, New York Times, Chicago Tribune And Sun Francisco Chronicle have been the most influential newspapers in the United States. A study of the editorials written during 1948 and the mid-1950s. However, reveals that these newspapers were ignorant of China's Civil War in 1949 and unconcerned with Chinese issues. The conflict between KMT and CCP or the history of CCP, for example, remained absent in editorials. China's Civil War was too complex for the American correspondents who were unfamiliar with Chinese polities, economics, history as well as the Chinese language to comprehend. Their analyses were superficial. As a result, the editorials could only approach China's problem from a democratic perspective and summoned American aid to KMT based on their anti-Communist standpoint.
