Present day Kaohsiung, the largest port of Taiwan, aside from having a significant role in the commerce and transportation, the most important aspect it played was being the military center of Southern Taiwan. This development can be traced from the time it was called Takow during the late Qing Dynasty period.Takow as an excellent port was gradually being noticed after commerce was opened following signature of Tianjin treaty in 1858. Taiwan was made a province in 1885, then governor Liu-Ming Chaung started new planning for military installations. Qing Dynasty's effort (for Takow) ended with cessation of Taiwan to Japanese Empire in 1895 following the signature of Treaty of Shimonoseki. Not much research was published regarding military and defensive installation for periods between 1875 to 1895. The late Qing Dynasty's Feng-Shan County Map currently held at (Beijing) National Library of China fills gap for this part of history. Current article tries to discuss topic of population distribution, military encampment through this map hoping to add more insight in this area.
