Experience of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Treated With Twice-Daily Radiation Therapy

並列摘要

Thirty-one histologically proved nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cases in 1988 were by chance to be entered into this twice-daily radiation therapy (b.i.d.) scheme study trying to finish a radical dose in a shorter overall course before the long New Year Holiday. They received 150 cGy/fraction twice a day with a separation of 6 hours. Radiation sensitizers were given as routine at that period. The total dose to nasopharynx was 6000-7000 cGy/39-64 days and to cervical lymphatic chains 3900-6150 cgy/24-45 days. The age group was younger and the stages were earlier as compared with the rest NPC treated in 1988 (159 ases). This explains the better 4-year survival rate as comparison with those 159 cases. On the other hand, we selected another 31 similar cases from the rest NPC treated by conventional fraction. The result was the same indicating the b.i.d. scheme did not give a better result as expected.
