Abstracts This study combined qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to explore the psychological characteristics of elite athletes in Taiwan. The purposes were to further understand the psychological qualifications underlying successful sport performance as well as to establish a local psychological inventory for more effective evaluation of the mind of the athletes. A standardized 33-item inventory was developed through in-depth interviews, inductive content analysis and two independent sample pretests. The main themes of the test content were motivation, adjusting strategy, emotional stability, self-encouragement, confidence, goal orientation and refocus. Additionally, the adjusting strategy was the most influential subscale of all in the inventory.
