Coastal retreat is the most obvious destructive processes along the northwestern coast of Taiwan. Between the river mouth of the Tanshui River and the Touchian River, at least 4 coastal sections which have experienced severe retreat were identified by comparing two sets of aerial photos taken twenty years apart and by field investigation. The most typical retreat area located at the northern end of study area has retreat at least 306 m over past twenty years. Typhoon induced storm wave attack the foot of sand dunes, and strong wind of northwestern and typhoon transport the deposits of sand dunes from windward to leeward, make the sand dune shifting landward. Otherwise, collection of channel sediment in the river caused the decrease of land-origin sediment along the coast, results the unbalance sediment budget along the coast are the main factors that make the coast recession.
