Caudal Epidural Block for Patients with Acute Low Back Pain

摘要

Acute low back pain is a very common disease in Rehabilitation clinics. Although acute low back pain can be successfully treated with epidural block, there is few researches for the efficacy of caudal epidural block on acute low back pain. Seventeen patients with acute low back pain were included and managed with caudal epidural block. The therapeutic effect was evaluated with a 5-point pain rating scale.
Pain scale of the seventeen patients reduced from mean 4.59 to 2.12 one hour after CEB. One months later, 7 patients had complete pain relief, 4 patients had 4 points pain scale, 2 patients had 2 points pain scale. If the definition of effective of CEB was pain scale reduced to 0, 1, and 2, the effective percentage was 41%, 65% and 76%, respectively. The level of pain before caudal epidural block was compared with that measured 1 hour and 1 month later, with a significant relief of pain (2 tailed P = 0.004 ＜ 0.05).
In conclusion, caudal epidural block without steroid is a safe and effective method for the relief of acute low back pain with radiation pain to lower extremities.
