Utilizing a nationwide sample of 6073 university professors in Taiwan, this paper explored academics' perceptions toward their work environment as well as the differences in satisfaction levels among teachers of various characteristics-institution (public vs. private), gender, age, rank, and discipline. The results showed that, among the five dimensions in analysis, university teachers were most satisfied with organizational culture and least with salary and fringe benefits. Compared with their private counterparts, public university teachers were more satisfied with teaching/research facilities as well as development and evaluation practices. Private university teachers, on the other hand, exhibited a higher level of satisfaction toward salary and benefit. Male teachers were generally more satisfied than their female counterparts. Teachers 55 years and older expressed higher satisfaction; so did full professors. Academicians in Medical and Health Sciences indicated the lowest satisfaction level among all. Implications for university management and future research were discussed.
