College Students Growing Up in Alcoholic Families: Incidence, Personal Characteristics, and Intergenerational Transmission

摘要

本研究試圖瞭解我國大學生成長於酗酒家庭的數量；檢視他們經歷家庭中酗酒與暴力的情形；比較酗酒家庭與非酗酒家庭大學生特質之差異；以及探討酗酒的世代傳遞現象。研究共獲得台灣公私立大學一十三所學校991份有效樣本。研究發現約四分之一的大學生報告父親或母親有喝酒情形，其中約一成一被定義為嚴重的酗酒；父親酗酒較母親為多。家庭暴力經驗方面，受訪大學生中8%有因父母親喝酒而挨打的經驗，18.8%有目睹或聽見父母間相互攻擊的事件。
統計分析進一步顯示，酗酒家庭與兒童虐待、目睹婚姻暴力有顯著關聯；酗酒家庭成年子女的特質傾向於固執、害怕失控、拘謹、低自我價值感；有家庭暴力經驗者也有固執及低自我價值的情形。在受訪大學生中飲酒人數及飲酒量並不算嚴重，只有少數有較多喝酒行為；而酗酒的世代傳遞現象並未得到確證。

This study intends to explore the incidence and experiences of college students who grew up in families with alcoholic parents; the relationship between alcoholism and violence in alcoholic families; the differences in personal characteristics between students growing up in alcoholic and non-alcoholic families; and the possibility of intergenerational transmission of alcoholism. A survey was conducted with 991 college students from 13 universities in Taiwan. First, the results show that 25% of the respondents reported that one of their parents had the habit of drinking; 11% of those parents could be defined as having serious drinking problems and they were more likely to be fathers rather than mothers. Second, around 8% of the college students growing up in alcoholic families were abused by their alcoholic parents and 18% witnessed violence between their parents. Third, further analyses demonstrate that alcoholism in families was significantly related to child abuse and violence witness. Adult children from alcoholic families tended to be stubborn, fear of losing control, cautious, and low self-esteem. Those students experiencing family violence also had the characteristics of stubbornness and low self-esteem. The concept of intergenerational transmission of alcoholism was not confirmed in this study, since the number of alcoholics and the quantity of alcohol consumption among the respondents were small.
