The purposes of this study were to explore the competence and the teaching needs for clinical preceptors. A retrospective research design was used in this study. The structured questionnaires were administrated to the clinical preceptors. One hundred and ninety-seven clinical preceptors completed the questionnaires. In the Statistical Program for the Social Science Personal Computer (SPSS-PC), the descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation, Spearman correlation and One- way ANOVA were used for data analysis. The results showed as followings: (1)The average score of the competence for clinical preceptors was 4.17. The competence of interpersonal relationship was the highest and the teaching skill was the lowest. (2)The average score of the teaching needs for clinical preceptors was 3.47. The average score of the needs in learning for clinical preceptors was 3.45. The average score of the needs in instructing students for clinical preceptors was 3.52. (3)The average score of the competence in explanation with demonstration and practicing patient care for nursing practice was the highest. The improvement of motivation in clinical practice for students was the lowest.(4) The average score of the teaching needs in realization the reason of learning problems for students was the highest and understanding in teaching salary was the lowest. (5) The competence for clinical preceptors was significantly correlated with the teaching needs (p<0.01). (6) The competence for clinical preceptors was significantly correlated with years of experience as a nursing staff (p<0.05). (7) The teaching needs for clinical preceptors was signify-candy correlated with years of experience as a nursing staff (p<0.05). The result of this study provided us to improve the quality of the clinical preceptorships.
