This article reviews literature on the relationships between creativity and mental disorder. This is not only to update the past literature but also to have an epidemiological and theoretical discussion. The empirical studies have methodological difficulties and numerous in definitions and concepts about the topic. The results of studies offer limited support for the proposition that schizophrenia and bipolar disorders are linked to creativity. The negative symptoms of schizophrenia limit creativity. Bipolar disorders are positively correlated with high creativity. Many artists and writers suffer from affective disorders than the general population. In conclusion, evidences support some links between creativity and mental disorder, but causal mechanism remains obscured.
