Along with the rapid aging process of the elder population and the increase of chronic and critical patients in the 21st century, competent and responsible professionals to offer safe, quality patient care in the nursing science are needed. In other countries, license update and board certification are well-established systems. They not only protect the rights of the patients, but also provide a quality control mechanism for medical institutes. On the contrary, periodical review or qualification of the nursing board are absent in Taiwan. The nursing advance system varies across hospitals. Acceptable standard criteria to evaluate such courses are, as yet, non-existent, resulting in insufficient quality control of nursing profession and clients' safety. By analyzing the transition of nursing environment, the present situation and the importance of nursing certification, this article discusses our licensure system. In addition, in order to apply the future revolution, nine suggestions were also provided.
