The purpose of this study was to survey the prevalence, severity and predictors of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in operation room nurses. This cross-sectional correlation study used a purposive sample. Structure questionnaires were used to collect data from 213 female nurses employed at operation room and anesthetic unit in two medical centers in Southern Taiwan. The prevalence of MSDs was 84.5%. Age, years of nursing experience, years of operation room service, and spinal disease history had significant impact on the severity of MSDs. Significant predictors of the severity of MSDs were age and spinal disease history, and they accounted for 13.4% of total variance. We suggest managers and nurses should concern about the accumulated musculoskeletal injury. Particularly, adjusting nurses' tasks and encouraging use of protective devices could be considered for nurses who have spinal disease history and for old aged employees in operation room. For the prevention of MSDs in all operation room nurses, in-service education is advised.
