Literature concerning instruction in the field of foreign language learning has traditionally been replete with the discussions of linguistic competence, but relatively lacking in the intercultural competence. Culture was deemed as a part which was to a great extent overlooked in foreign language class. With the growing emphasis on cultural understanding, it is necessary to build a concept that teaching and learning a foreign language should not be isolated from its cultural content. Teachers should incorporate culture in foreign language teaching. The present study intends to discuss the relationship between culture and language, the necessity of cultural teaching and the present problems of our own cultural education. Finally, several proposals are made for improving cultural teaching strategies.
